The Story Behind The Ghost Beside Me

Two years have passed since my short paranormal romance ‘The Ghost Beside Me’ was published. Two years that have served as the most important of my writing career and this book represents that and so much more. Prior to the publication of ‘Ghost’ my 5th book, I had nearly walked away from publishing and writing all together, this creative journey can be arduous and many different things took their toll so this book represented a symbol of resilience and eventually the philosophy that I carry today- never giving up. Ever.

2019 was a year I spent repairing myself as a writer. Before then, I had gone hard into writing and publishing. Books One to Four were published in two years – the results by the end of that were minimal, social media is something I hadn’t fully figured out, being an indie author is a constant struggle that I had yet to discover too. I was in my late twenties and the previous decade was coming to fruition – I was also moving into my own place for the first time. Things were busy, stressful and something was going to snap and it did. I took most of my stress out on myself and this author path which was seeing near enough no results.

Good things do take time and I’ve learned that now, I am content with that now, but lessons for me are always learned slowly and the hard way. Expectation always plays a part in this journey and now its more realistic but back then it wasn’t so I suffered in my own mind for it. So how did I find myself? I went back to my writing routes. I went ‘dark’ on social media for a short time, I even put the laptop away and started to write down the ideas I had for a paranormal romance that would tribute to my own thoughts and feelings, an echo of me finding myself, finding resolve and a path forward. The concept of Edward Neville being an introvert by choice struggling to break that mould and wanting to socialize with others was a vessel mirroring my own struggles. There were also so many ‘real’ elements of me that went into the story, the concept of trying to fit in at a work place, the monotony of commuting and of course living alone.

Although I was hurting at the time I started ‘Ghost’ I seemingly produced a story that might be my best attempt at emotional depth and expression. For a 59 page book, you get every essence of my inner emotion through Edward Neville. The words poured onto the page and soon enough by early 2019 I had a fully handwritten draft. Then I put it away and did probably the most important thing I have done on this path. I began reading and reviewing indie books. My return to Twitter sparked it all to life when I put out a Tweet asking for indie books to review – the response was huge and showed me the potential this platform has, so I got to work. (This was late 2018, long before those tweets where people fish for engagement by asking for book recommendations).

While the reviews and social media stuff started building my profile, I was reading because I was trying to find myself and my love for stories. The wonderful thing is, it worked. This was just me by myself reading books but then the reviews started helping others and so it became inadvertently selfless. And by the time September of 2019 rolled around I was ready and then the perfect thing aligned. You see 2019 was the 13th anniversary of my Grandfather’s passing – a man who’s influence is still with me today. He told me a real ghost story back when I was a kid and that story became the inspiration for the ghost in this book and now I had a reason to publish it – to tribute him. 13 years later because we always had a thing for the superstition of Friday the 13th and I knew wherever he was, that would make him laugh.

I got to work transferring a handwritten story onto my laptop and organised the cover art. And this book would carry the weight of all the above; an emotional tribute, finding myself, self-repair and that important 5th book where they say things start to happen. And they did.

‘The Ghost Beside Me’ soon hit the highest number of reviews any of my books got on release – even now it is the quickest of my books to reach 30+ reviews. Sales were the best at the time and I’d made some level of writing redemption. Redemption in many walks of life is rare and so this book represented that. Expectation plays a huge role in authoring, especially at the self publishing level and so with this book my expectation was zero and that where it remains for every release. This journey and its success is governed by the beholder, you.

The truth is, and whilst finding myself I never gave up even though sometimes it can get dark, it can depressing and it is hard, there is always hope where there is life and creativity. Books are a truly wonderful thing and even now with all this modern tech, social media and other stuff, books still have a powerful mystique, their wonder to expand our minds has never changed. Their power to connect us and heal us when we most need it is something I will always cherish

And now, two years after publication, the majority of authors who I have connected with choose ‘Ghost’ because it has become a writers favourite. Something I hold dear to my heart for what it really represents. I guess writers can read between the emotional and symbolic lines, well, they did for this book and that means a lot to me. As a lower profile published author I never get much of a chance to talk about my work in this way and The Ghost Beside Me stands out as an experience like no other. It got me back into to writing, it proves that books can still be successful after publication and it paved the way to elevate me higher than I could ever imagine. My centre pillar of blogging comes from reviewing books, and their power is what put me back together.

There is great power in your stories authors, embrace it!

To those who have read and reviewed and supported this 59 page tribute to many things, thank you and thank you for reading.

The Ghost Beside Me by Lee Hall

Happy Sunday friends. Today I would like to share this wonderful review of my paranormal romance The Ghost Beside Me by a wonderful fellow blogger.

“…what do you know of the forces that stretch beyond the boundaries of our own mortality?”

Lee Hall, The Ghost Beside Me

October is the perfect month for a ghost story. I learned about The Ghost Beside Me through the Twitter writing community.

With its enchanting cover, The Ghost Beside Me drew me in. Part ghost story and part love story, this beautifully written novella is about the lonely M. Neville and his quest for companionship.

Initially, I was a little thrown by the formal tone of the language, but it worked with the setting and the story. I appreciated the book’s overall message. I just wish it had been a little longer with more character development.

I’ve read other works by Lee Hall and he is a versatile writer. Bonus: Hall includes a sneak peek of The Teleporter in this book. I will be…

Free and Discounted Books – Today Only!

For the first time ever all 7 of my books are being price promoted simultaneously to celebrate the 5th anniversary of Open Evening being published.

Without my debut novel nothing else would have followed and seeing as I have a plethora of books, they are all discounted except for Open Evening which is FREE to download today only!

Some thoughts, details and links are below. As always thank you for the continued support of your local neighbourhood indie author!

It’s kind of scary how time flies when your busy and trying to get the world to read your words and somehow it has been 5 years since my publishing journey began. Those who have been around a while will know in 2015 I basically started again with a project based partly on a bad dream and mostly on my own high school days of struggle. Add a little creature feature horror, scratch that, a lot of creature feature horror and somehow Open Evening was born. Originally taken from six sides of lined paper full of scratchy writing after my fourteen year old self tried to recollect the events of that bad dream, I somehow fashioned it years later, into a fully fledged book that probably means the most in all of my works.

Before Open Evening released in 2016. I kind of got caught up in the whole querying thing with sub-par science fiction that wasn’t ready and in truth I wasn’t ready so starting again paved the way to where I am now. Someday you might see that science fiction which has grown with me and I have a huge amount of books to offer the world but until then enjoy the ones I have available.

Some of the books on my shelf may be different in comparison but for today they are all the same price.

The Ghost Beside Me is a paranormal romance about an introvert who struggles with loneliness until something not of this mortal world tries to reach out. Based partly on my own paranormal experiences and a ghost story my late Grandfather told me its a short but powerful read. Perfect for the coming spooky season of Halloween and beyond.

The Teleporter, many of you will already know and this book has become my most successful title this year. With over 160 Amazon ratings in six months I think I can class it as a hit. Kurt Wiseman is a mid-twenties slouch who is suddenly thrown into his own super hero tale and has to make a choice in order to save the day. Full of comedic wit and fourth wall breaking fun, it is bound to make you laugh at some point.

Consistent Creative Content is basically the culmination of my journey as an author, blogger and social media personality. Part-memoir part-guide, this book is designed to show you what I’ve done to find success that I am happy with and how you can do that too. Follow my words.

Of course Open Evening is just the start of a wider series known as the Order of the Following. Every other book in that series is discounted for today!

‘Mark of a Demon’ by Despoina Kemeridou – Review

A modern feel-good fable of forbidden love and a hint of darkness

54193085. sx318

Despoina Kemeridou returns with her unique fairy tale style voice to tell a heart warming, feel-good modern fable that explores many different themes including love, sacrifice and the value of life. We are introduced to ‘Heather’ who is born with a weak heart and so her mother bargains with demonic forces to save her but at a cost.

That bargain will eventually come to fruition and as ‘Heather’ grows up we see her young life unfold in the authors style that keeps pages moving while also providing important plot detail – this has all the feeling and vibe that fairy tales of old contain but with a fuller feeling story that carries more of an adult theme.

To say anymore about the story would be giving spoilers and this is a book that deserves to be discovered and immersed in, even if it is a shorter read that is by no means a disadvantage. There a moments that are both heart breaking and heart warming that make up the drama that is a fun read and escape that I highly recommend.

4 Stars – A great addition to the authors repertoire. Reviews left via Amazon and Goodreads.

Check out a recent Hall of Information Interview with Despoina here.

‘This is for all you lovers out there…’

Or those just looking for a short, thought provoking read….

Now don’t say that I don’t love you all, because I do!

Happy V day followers and people looking for a bargain. My 5th book ‘The Ghost Beside Me’ is free to download today and today only.

This is a special one off deal because today we should apparently be celebrating love and sending you all flowers is not viable just yet – maybe if I sell 100,000 e-books (don’t hold me to that) we can revisit that idea…

The Ghost Beside Me is a short paranormal romance about finding a way through loneliness and highlights the struggle many of us have with introversion and depression. For 60 pages, it’s a pretty powerful.

I shall let the book do the rest of the selling.

‘The Ghost Beside Me’ Official Cover Reveal!

‘The Ghost Beside Me’ is coming next week and well I should probably share with ya’ll the rather spectacular looking book cover which was literally finished today!

Scroll down to check it out. If you ask me I think it’s incredible and Design For Writers have yet again done an amazing job!

So what is ‘Ghost’ about? Well in a few words, it’s about a lot of things. It’s first and foremost a ghost story and a love story combined. The book is dedicated to the memory of my Grandfather whom when I was quite young told me and my brother a ghost story which I still think to this day is true. With that dedication comes a story inspired by that and an opportunity for me to deliver an important message that the people we have in our live’s may leave but their influence never goes away and they are always with us.

The story is also about overcoming the adversities our own mind can create such as anxiety and loneliness which is such an important thing we must all talk about more. For quite a short book there’s a lot going on and I do hope you will all join me for it’s release hopefully next week!

400 Followers/ 5th Book Announcement

It’s been nearly a year since I seriously considered walking away from writing and blogging for good. We all have those moments where we question the path that we are on and whether or not it’s ‘worth’ continuing.

The real honest truth is I wasn’t happy with where this journey of writing was heading. You could say it was down to lack of ‘sales’, reviews, followers and even readers; this was especially so after churning out 4 books in 2 years and not having much to show for it. That story telling fire inside of me began to fade.

400.PNG

Even now I still don’t know what I really want from writing and maybe I’ll never know. All I actually know is that I want to tell stories and that is something I love doing. Even back last year when that fire in me almost died I never stopped writing, even during my most darkest of hours last year, whether it was my next stage play or a book, the truth is, it put me back together in a sense and I did a lot of soul searching. I eventually accepted that my ‘success’ as a writer isn’t actually down to me, it’s down to everyone else, and then came the ultimate realisation;

It doesn’t matter if I ever reach a pinnacle moment of success in writing, I do this because I love it,

and

If I can’t help myself as an author then why not help others?

And so I got to work. What started out as an initial plan to review a few indie books in order to get some reviews for my own stuff exploded before my eyes.

People, good people, bloggers, writers, reviewers and everyone else in between started to take note of my efforts. It turns out the answer to all my writing success woes stood right in front of me, don’t be an island and my actual success doesn’t matter. Enjoy the ride, enjoy the creating and now above everything enjoy the words of others! I couldn’t list the sheer amount I have learned from reading fellow indie books!

My motives for reviewing indie books changed from a vain attempt to get more book sales to an unconditional act in supporting story tellers who deserve to be read. On that journey I have found all of you, loyal wonderful followers who are now 400 strong.

To get an appreciation for how much this has quickly exploded, I celebrated 200 followers for this Hall of Information back in March! In that time that following has doubled.

My whole faith in this and all of my creative fire has been restored this year because of people like you. And so it is with that in mind I would like to officially announce my next book release will happen this December. I’ve decided to do this super last minute for a few reasons but the only reason you need to know is that I am releasing book number 5 for all of you; followers, readers, supporters and everyone during this journey that has become my friend. It is you guys that put my faith in this back together.

‘The Ghost Beside Me’ is a totally unique paranormal romance written in the style of a diary that see’s a paranormal sceptic convinced to believe in not only the forces that aren’t of this mortal world but in love also, that is in order to no longer be alone. Whether or not you find companionship in a ghost or a physical being isn’t the point, love doesn’t discriminate, even in mortality. Even if people are ‘gone’ they never leave us.

It’s kind of a Christmas story as well and in a sense I think Christmas ghost stories are far better than Halloween ones, there’s more of a meaning to them. Although I think it has potential to be incredibly powerful it is quite short, I’m talking less than 15,000 words in length but it’s still a book.

I promise you’ll be hearing a lot more about ‘Ghost’ soon; this is a completely solo project apart from Design for Writers who will providing the awesome cover art. I am soon going to reach out to a few people for a beta reading opportunity.

To everyone who follows this blog, all 400 plus of you, thank you, rock and roll man!
