Cemetery House; my 4th book is out now

Yep you that read title right… but you read that wrong! My 4th Book Cemetery House is published and available now in both paperback and digital download.

books.PNG

It’s been one hell of a journey from the initial drafting all the way to the final edit and cover reveal; it’s safe to say Cemetery House has kicked my butt and now the real work begins; promotion and spreading the word.

This is brand new territory as I haven’t released a sequel until now which means the targeted readership is simply those who read and enjoyed Open Evening and for that I have poured my heart and soul into Cemetery House; this sequel is truly for all of you who have supported me from day one.

So what is it about you ask? Cemetery House is a continuation of Open Evening and begins as a prequel by sharing the story of legendary character Twister and how he came to be. That takes up the first quarter of the book; after which we catch up with those who survived Open Evening two weeks later. This time around the crew know what’s coming and it’s unique in a sense that these characters run towards the terror and not from it. This makes for a meaningful life lesson; run towards adversity and embrace it.

What unfolds is probably my best work to date but that doesn’t take away anything from the Teleporter (which you should read and review) and of course my other works.

From my extensive years of watching good and bad sequels I know exactly what makes a story continuation work and have factored that into CH. This time around you’ll get answers from questions asked in Open Evening plus much much more. There is a heightened tension which builds and rides the expectation of what we know is coming and when it happens you will not be disappointed, trust me.

Now all there is left to do is thank all of my readers and supporters for the work they have done to spread the word about my books. Do remember to tell your friends about this awesome author you know who wroted some wonderful books, take a selfie with the paperback or E-book and spread the word. I don’t do this for money I do this because story telling is what I love doing and immersing people into another world is what I do. This is escapism in its finest and together we can all escape.

Cemetery House is out now!

Weekly Ramble #10

The 4th book release is nigh, and things have been taking off, but this isn’t just all me. My projects are brought to life by the efforts of some real dedicated people. As a writer I would simply be lost without my editor. There is a hell of a lot more to editing than most people think. All of my stories have been painstakingly crafted, long after my work has been done.

This one may the best work I have seen not only from an editing point of the view but the cover artwork also,  a reveal will follow, and I am sure it will impress, it blew me away and conveys exactly what I want to say in this story.

Readership is growing by the day with my most loyal readers leading the charge with reviews and general buzz about my words. The tribe is small but very effective and dedicated, something which means more than anything else. This thing will take time, it always does, in essence writing a book feels like sending a letter two years ago and finally getting a response this week.

Reviews really do sell books but most importantly above all, people talking to one another sells them more than anything. We live in a world where spoken communication is dying, maybe talking about books will keep it alive for a little longer, we’ll see…

My 3rd book The Teleporter is released!

Let’s face it, the internet works in weird and wonderful ways. My last two book release posts had zero views and zero likes so I could be saying anything right now, like Zuckerberg is actually one of those lizard folk, or cheese is in fact political propaganda to keep us lactose intolerant…

But for those inclined, my third book THE TELEPORTER is officially available via amazon. Click here to check it out…

This time I have written what appears to a super hero comedy on the surface but has actually turned out to be something way more than the genre it’s identified by. Although yes it is still funny (I really hope!) the story faces many different modern issues in this world we live. From low self esteem and self reflection to corruption in politics and business, this one I hope will result in giving the reader something to think about all with a healthy dose of haha! But these serious issues are never treated as a joke, that’s what makes it compelling.

dfw-lh-tt-cover-ebook

So what’s the story?

Our main character Kurt Wiseman is serial ‘drinksmith’ (cool word huh?) and a general layabout/ graphic novelist. That is until he accidentally discovers the ability to Teleport whilst investigating his corrupt millionaire media controlling Trump… I mean boss.

What follows is a story of triumph, struggle, friendship and even mild addiction as Kurt becomes the Teleporter and looks to fight injustice, not because he should, but because he chooses to. The whole morality of good vs bad is highlighted throughout the narrative as our comedy guy fights the forces laid against him.

Above all this story is about honesty and power. In these words lay the most truth I have ever told as a writer, and as long as fiction contains some element of realism then the reader can relate.

I have to take this opportunity to thank my heroic book team for helping me put this together. My editor and publisher Nicky of Satin Publishing has been truly wonderful throughout the process and always contactable when needed. Her work has enhanced my story by tenfold.

Design for Writers have provided another fantastic cover managing to set a tone I could only visualize by words and they have been brilliant throughout.

My final nod is to the loyal people who have already got themselves a copy, the following I have is small but unconditional loyal and for that I must thank you a million times. This whole deal is to prove my passion is worth pursuing and my readers do that every time without fail. Thank you.

For people old and new who are following me and reading my stuff I must implore you to leave a review via amazon, goodreads, a blog or even Facebook (Lizardberg wont mind), and remember Selfies sell books

The Teleporter is out now!

Darke Blood Goodreads Giveaway

It’s time for a Giveaway! Yes free stuff alert, because I have began a Goodreads giveaway for my latest book Darke Blood…

You can get your hands on a signed copy of my latest book by entering the giveaway for free here! In order to enter you can sign in to Goodreads through Facebook making this whole deal a lot easier than signing up to a site you may not use often. I am asking for an honest review in exchange of entering the giveaway because it’s all about reviews, reviews and more reviews! Over 100 people have entered so far!

With publication day and the release of Darke Blood behind me now its up to the rest of the world to help spread the word about the book. Reviews are what sell books and must I implore you to leave one on either amazon or goodreads  or both; even if you are only a portion of the way though Darke Blood, every review helps!

And some of you have been fantastic in showing your support, the #darkeblood selfie movement has begun which is massive in getting the book seen across social media.

Publication Day! Darke Blood out now!

The day is finally here! My second book Darke Blood is officially out now! The selfies already started earlier this week after I kicked off proceedings on Instagram where I can happily say we have already broke records with the amount of likes it recieved.

image

That many likes for something without a cat, food or cleavage…

And that is all I want out of this book, growth and evolution. A few more sales and few more likes than last time will make me a happy independently published author.   Above all more reviews on Amazon and hopefully Goodreads will grant this project a success, so please if you read my work leave a review!

I must take this opportunity to thank everyone for their support towards Darke Blood, this was indeed the hardest story I have ever struggled to tell and seeing the whole thing come together with your support has been fantastic. Being a two time author makes this all seem like I am more than just a lucky one off guy who published one book, plus it gives readers a back catalogue to delve into if they like my work.

If you like Darke Blood and survive the ride,  the twists and the turns then I guarantee you will be a reader of my stuff for years to come. This one really tests the boundaries for the reader as well as tell an atmospheric psychological story of redemption and identity. And yeah there are vampires, witches and some connections to Open Evening!

This hasn’t been a sole effort and I must thank my editor and publisher Nicky from Satin Publishing for helping me so much develop this story into what was an initial draft all the way to polished published book. Darke Blood went through many minor and major changes throughout the drafting and editing process. My next thank you goes to Design for Writers , they simply gave this book an identity by creating a fantastic looking cover. I was really stumped as to what I wanted this one to look like so Design for Writers saved me in that sense and the outcome is a world class looking cover.

All there is left for to say is thank you everyone, I have achieved my dream once again and now it’s over to you to help me find some success with it. Let’s start a new selfie movement with Darke Blood and remember your shares, likes and comments are what generates buzz about this, and will ultimately decide its success!

Happy publication Day!

And heres the direct link to the book…

A guide to getting published: Part 1

Very recently I was asked in person about my experiences of being a published author. What does it take to reach that moment of holding your own book in your hands?

How do you go from imagination and thought harnessing all the way to print?

Thinking about it, if we can go deep only for a few reflective moments and if I were to turn around and look at the road that lays behind me. Just beyond that moonlit horizon is a whole series of stories and experiences that made up my official journey to publication.

This series of posts is a guide of how I did it, what I learned, what went well, what didn’t and above all and like everything in the world of ‘publishing’ it’s subjective towards the beholder. By that I mean there is more than one way to get ‘published’ and be ‘successful’. There are several inputs that result in different outputs, but luckily for you this is my road map of a journey which started in 2012.

First of all above anything you have to answer the 3 following questions…

So you want to be a writer?

I was twelve years old when I first started writing on that old windows 98 computer, it was a rainy Sunday afternoon… Everyone has their story and mine probably isn’t any different to how you or anyone else realized they wanted to be a wordsmith. It’s the very first thing you must decide, do you really want to do this?

For me I just had a story in my mind which expanded by tenfold over the years, it grew with me as I became an adult and never ever went away. Sometimes you should listen to the various characters in your head even if they do talk out of term. This persistent universe which I had created convinced me that I should one day show it to the world and hence question number 1 was answered.

writing

Do you have what it takes to dedicate yourself?

You have to be really dedicated! No I really mean that…

Again I’m being subjective when say this because I can only relate it to my experience. Are you ready to dedicate the hours and time into putting together a story that is made purely from organic thought? Are you willing to learn the translation process?

Translation huh, you ask. Writing is nothing more than taking a thought in your brain and converting into written word. But the big revelation is that you don’t have to be that good at it to be successful! And most writers are judged for their particular style of translation.

So can you translate what you see in your mind into words and sentences?

To be honest in the earlier days I struggled immensely with my description and detail. This is something which will only improve after spending hours practicing and even now I struggle. Back space will feature heavily along with giving your laptop or computer screen the death stare of ‘vacancy’.

My original routine consisted of coming home from work, taking a shower, making a cup of tea and then spending 4 hours writing. This grasping the translation stuff doesn’t happen overnight and for nearly two years I was writing more than I was doing anything else outside of work. Was the stuff I made any good? Probably not and I would even say that out of that 4 hours of work 30 minutes of it produced anything readable. It does take time and there is no short cut to putting in hours.

Nowadays my process has evolved as I have. I will spend up to an hour drafting new material, and all of it mostly readable work!

In this step you will have to financially commit yourself in buying a PC or laptop. Unfortunately and as romantic as pen and paper is, it’s just not the fashion!

So do you have what it takes to put in the time?

Okay so you’re dedicated but it still isn’t enough!

Are you the right person to call yourself a writer?

This is NOT a deep reflective question where you will spend days pondering about what your calling is in life. Take it at face value. Are you willing to be very very patient, so patient that it’s a discipline.

There is no better way to look professional and serious by being patient/cool about things. Just breathe and relax.

So you’ve sent a dozen copies of your manuscript out and haven’t received a reply. You may never will and what have you lost? Sending stuff out to zero response will happen but the concept of not being bothered by any results will really give you a one up. There are probably many many sorry cases of people following up and demanding they read their manuscript and consider it to be the next Harry Potter series. Just be cool and if someone likes what you write, they’ll find you trust me.

Mold yourself into a patient and professional person even if this is just a hobby. There is no excuse for bad manners in life and writing is no exception.

This will be a journey of solitude, and by that most of the time nothing really happens other than you, a laptop and the story. So be prepared to be alone, only a writer becomes a story teller alone.

Prepare to be criticized and judged. People react in weird ways when you say you’re a writer. How you handle that will define how you take any criticism.

write 2

Next comes the real journey…

I can’t physically teach you how to write and develop a work process, that’s up to you to figure out.

So you’ve written your masterpiece and edited it over and over again until all you see in those words is white noise.

Now it’s time for the big plunge, going public!

Arrive on social media and figure it all out

In order to build a profile as an author you have to have an online presence.

You can do this as you are writing, but to really be taken seriously you must be on social media. I began with small baby steps, I created an author page on Facebook and then got all my friends to like it. Over time friends of friends will engage and as you network other writer types will join in.

Next came twitter and eventually I got myself into blogging which is a big thing these days.

Blogging is an opportunity to talk and not be interrupted, its also an opportunity to share your opinion to the world. Whether that be a topical review, pressing journalism or just an update about what you are writing. A blog is a center piece to your online presence. Give it a catchy and even a slightly humorous name. Remember we aren’t curing disease here we are just arranging words together that turns into something that reads well. Have fun, be silly, be serious but above all be there! To date my most successful blog post is nothing about books, its about Yoga!

Social media success is somewhat an enigma at times. It’s not all about ‘hey I’m a writer and my big book is coming next year’. You almost have to go fight club and not actually talk about that sort of stuff. It’s sounds weird but it’s true. Post stuff that you find interesting and may not be relevant to writing, you may just find yourself with a new follower or comment. In my resources section you can see a brief guide to social media including the use of Instagram.

And so you’ve taken the plunge into deciding you want to be a writer. By now you may have even completed a first draft, and yes my first drafts are also awful. The Facebook page has been launched and you have started to blog. You may even be thinking about how weird twitter really is.

Your building blocks are starting to form a foundation towards getting a book out there!

Part 2 will feature my journey and the choices I made in getting my first book published! We will cover the details of what goes into being independently published and what you need to do to get there.

2017 #writing #revolution

Warning: Old Post Alert. How did you find me…

Who would have thought putting black ink on the underside of your forearm would leave such a bad rash after?

revolution

Either way the photo looks kind of cool and I’m willing to live with the redness for a while, plus it also displays my prime directive for 2017!

Revolution! Not viva la France or anything politically crazy like that but something I have envisioned for my little patch amongst the world of the internet and book writing. In order for me to have any type of success and to sell books I must revolutionise the way I do things here. After all this is a journey to publication and that is an experience that doesn’t finish after I reach print, especially for the first time.

2017 will see my second publication come to life and its coming sooner than you think! An announcement is imminent but until then you will have to put up with me telling you about my next novel DARKE BLOOD and the range of other exciting projects I have lined up for this year. So here’s the plan….

THE NEXT BOOK!

I set out just over a year ago to try and repeat the model I used when drafting Open Evening; that was to write a stand alone story in order to build up a profile as an author and try and make it a little bit good. After much frustration and hard work throughout the beginning of 2016, I clutched the few straws of ideas I had and made them into a wonderful little book I am ever so proud to bring to world.

DARKE BLOOD is a story of one person’s journey to find out who they really are and along the way meets some ‘people of the night’ types and some ‘spell casting’ types. Everything culminates in what I can best describe as a shutter island meets a gender swapped Twilight, sounds interesting right, cool.

MY NEXT PLAY!

This month, yes this month I will be making a moderate return to the stage for Iver Heath Drama Club’s annual pantomime show Jack and the Beanstalk! For those within the area of Iver heath and surrounding I must urge you come on down to watch a wonderful show put on by great performers who do so much for the community and guarantee a night of entertainment, plus you get to see me in a totally non writing capacity. Tickets can be found here which are very competitively priced, and I must stress there aren’t that many left, we have even sold out our Friday night show!

MY NEXT PLAY (that I am writing)

You may or may not know but I also write plays. 2016 saw the debut of my stage work with Hotel Doom and was a wonderful success. Well I’ve only gone and done it again, well kind of. Over the summer I envisioned myself writing a pantomime based of the story of Beauty and the Beast. I currently have ACT 1 of a script drafted which I fully intend to complete after presenting to my drama club peers. Then my full vision would be to direct it, exciting long term plans are the best plans. I say that because there’s nothing more satisfying than having a plan and then having someone ask you about it and you tell them until they get bored. Seriously having a plan is where success grows from!

OTHER STUFF INCLUDING TOP SECRET REBOOT OF OLD PROJECT THAT IS MY DESTINY TO WRITE

Right now after a nice few weeks away from editing I am drafting some new material. This stuff is very much connected to why I set out to be a writer. There will be robots, enough said. Right now I will call this Project X43.

JOIN MY MAILING LIST!

I have said before and will say it again, I have an abundance of free material I want to give out but I need you to sign up via email to this website. Trust me good stuff will only be sent your way, sign up today!

And so my 2017 is fully planned, I even have a list on my wall. Let the revolution of writing begin!!!!

DDP YOGA REVIEW

So here it is, my full review of DDP yoga! I have reached the conclusion of the beginner’s schedule under Phase 1 and I am ready to share with the world my results and thoughts.

yogy

A little about me:

In order for you to gauge whether or not this is a suitable work out plan first you must know my background.

I’m a 27-year-old male around 5’8 weighing 76 kg and have no serious medical conditions apart from undiagnosed sciatica which I have been suffering from since late May this year (2016). I am a shift worker and attend work at a range of sometimes weird hours and also have quick turn arounds (so I’m tired a lot), this also means I have to stay healthy and immune, so exercise is vitally important!

I first found out about DDP yoga from watching a documentary film called the Resurrection of Jake the Snake Roberts. Long story short but it’s worth a look (via Netflix), a burned out beaten up former pro wrestler is pretty much circling the drain physically and mentally, he is somewhat saved by a yoga lifestyle program designed by another former wrestler known as Diamond Dallas Page. The film follows Jake on an emotional journey of total recovery and redemption, all achieved by this life style made by DDP. Its some really inspirational stuff and even better for a wrestling fan like me. And so after seeing this film I checked out DDP yoga.

My Sciatica problem:

Around this time and after spending a few years sitting badly and not using correct posture I had pretty much destroyed my lower back which led to a severe flare up of sciatica on my right side. I was working constantly at this point, something crazy like over a 100 hours in 9 days so there was no time for any exercise or rest which are as important as each other. Right now I would seriously consider ditching the midnight surfing in bed and read a book instead!

A shooting and somewhat debilitating pain would run all the way from mid butt all the way down to my foot. I’m talking weird twitches, pins and needles and even locking up of the calf muscle, at one point I could hardly hobble on said leg. Something had to be done and so I looked to DDP yoga.

Previous exercise and fitness/ diet

I have held a membership of a gym since I was 18 and on average would go at least a few times a week mostly but I’ve never been motivated to go any more than that. Mostly I would focus on cardio based exercise with some weight lifting but nothing drastically heavy. On average I would say that I’m in ok shape, I could run few laps of the local sports field no problem and still can.

In terms of diet I suffer from acid reflux which keeps me away from fizzy pop and a lot of dairy. I eat fruit every day along with some kind of vegetables and meat. More recently I have had less of an emphasis of junk food so I eat pretty healthily.

DDP Yoga Review

By the time August rolled around, my sciatica was getting no better or worse. At least by now I could spend my exercise time walking and I did a lot of it. The longer I would spend walking the better I would feel.

I received my DDP yoga pack for my birthday from my better half and it had been shipped all the way from the US (there was an extra charge for customs, so watch out for that if your UK based).

This pack included six DVDS, a poster of various yoga positions and a guide book appropriately titled DDP YOGA, Fitness + Nutrition + Motivation.

The book was not only an introduction to DDP’s story but also a helpful insight as to what could be achieved, it’s written in a motivational style and DDP talks exactly how he does in the video sessions. The basics are covered along with a brief guide to the workouts. Then comes the workout grid which acts as your workout calendar. I chose the beginner schedule considering I’ve never done yoga before and because of my sciatica situation.

The phase 1 guide notes talks about looking towards nutrition. You don’t have to be strict to begin with but just start to think about avoiding processed stuff and junk. The rest of the guide talks of the next 2 phases and a more in depth nutrition guide which also includes recipes for meals and juicing. I immediately followed some of the later phase stuff and still do, such as what foods you should and shouldn’t combine. Even the smallest of tricks make all the difference, like eating fruit at the beginning of the day only when your stomach needs the sugars.

The very back page of the book jacket is a display of the many DDP yoga success stories. Real people who have had real results, so this stuff is jammed with motivation and its exactly what you need before embarking on this journey.

So I’ve read up and now I’m ready, so far so good.

Individual Work Out reviews

Being a phase 1 beginner I was introduced to the yoga sessions via the first recommended workout, the diamond dozen (there is a level below this called beginner if you are seriously beaten up). This 45 minute tutorial is presented by Diamond Dallas Page and with the use of fitness ‘models’ and by that I mean real people who have had results. He instructs you how to do all the various moves. To begin with this was a challenge and already I was feeling my sciatic muscles being used and manipulated along with other places.

DDP insists on making the workouts your own and there is a modification for every move. Most sequences involve dynamic resistance which gives you results if you put in the effort. Of course every sequence is finished off with the now famous diamond cutter move which involves flexing and putting in as much as you want/can.

The next workout I tackled next would be Energy! A 25 minute burst of energy which for me was a challenge in the leg department. This would involve standing splits on one leg and even some planking. Already the multiple use of muscles was beginning to take shape. This workout started out as a big challenge but eventually I needed to look for more, although I still use Energy every week and combine it with another workout! (And that is essential for results, especially if you are quite fit, many of the programs can be combined to get up the minutes)

Fat Burner turns up the heat a little and is the 30 minute long bigger brother of energy. Here we explore more planking and use of the legs which is a worthy challenge to even someone who considers themselves fit. Dynamic resistance fits well into this work out leaving most parts of the body given a good test just as long as you put in the effort.

My first month would consist of me doing energy and fat burner multiple times a week and this really gets the ball rolling of learning the style DDP teaches. He’s loud and larger than life in his sessions and gets you sweating and shouting!

After the two-month mark I felt ready to start combining Energy and Fat Burner with the shorter workout Red Hot core. This focuses on the important core muscles and even moves into more complicated and flexible yoga moves.

As I got to the end of phase 1 I was also introduced to a longer workout called Below the belt. A leg focused session which includes more flexible stuff and even some impact style planks. The initial sessions hint at what is to come and that is longer sessions with big results, but you have to stay persistent. Results will only come with dedication and trying hard and PERSISTANCE.

The work outs are designed to test you and all of them at first I struggled with. The beauty of this program is that most of the time you are standing still. No travelling to the gym or exercising out on dangerous roads or in bad weather. All you need is a yoga mat and DDP insists you get a heart monitor just to keep track of things.

Having only really touched the surface in phase 1 there are an abundance of workouts that are to follow along with multiple combinations but they require the ground work of the initial ones first. Eventually the sessions will get up to an hour long which I am very much looking forward to as the results are already apparent in me. I’m only up to DVD 3 of six after 40+ sessions and 13 weeks!

Results and Conclusion

My sciatica and any pain caused by it, is 95% gone. Most of which is with thanks to DDP yoga but not only has this program helped that but has also got me in better shape. For the first time in years I look in the mirror and can see muscle definition in my abdomen and chest so it definitely works!!. I’m stronger and more active, there’s now a spring in my once painful step.

Along the way, I have learned that sciatica also requires rest to heal and so I have combined my efforts to yoga and rest. These days I’m either in bed, doing yoga, writing or at work.

In conclusion his workout plan does work. But the rules are simple.

  1. Do it 3 to 4 times a week (but what if I haven’t got time? Make time its better than the gym!)
  2. Be consistent
  3. Measure your goals (Simply tallying up the amount of workouts is a motivation in its own right)
  4. Put in the effort (the more you put in the more you get out)
  5. Eat right 80% of the time (Swap that cup of coffee for juice once a day and build from there)
  6. HULK IT UP! (As DDP would say)

Everybody differs and people who are quite fit will need to look for challenges in more depth but there are so many different work outs to combine the possibilities are quite endless. I am only at the tip of the ice berg right now and so much better for it. People of all physical abilities can try this program and get results.

Diamond Dallas Page is forever telling you to make the workout your own and that’s what you got to do.

For a peace of mind, body and soul try DDP yoga and stick at it to see eventual results. Once a week isn’t enough! This workout is well worth the money!
